Dance Rules: Note - See also General Rules at front of Syllabus
1. No substitutions allowed in solos. One substitution will be allowed in group numbers. For more than one substitution, the approval of the Board is required. 2. Once a dance has been used, it MAY NOT be used by the SAME solo participant in classes for a period of THREE YEARS. 3. No person but the Hall Supervisor and theatre personnel will be allowed on the platform or backstage with the participant except with students 10 years of age and under. 4. In age limit classes, the age of the participant as of DECEMBER 31ST of the current Festival year will govern. For DUETS, use the age of the eldest participant and in TRIOS AND GROUP dances - the average age will govern. 5. All tap shoes must be removed before and after competing. 6. No walking around or practicing on the stage/backstage during sessions. Any dancers using the stage (walking on the stage, marking out a dance, etc) before or after a session during the festival will be disqualified. 7. Centre stage will be marked 8. ***ALL TAPES OR DISKS MUST BE CUED AND IDENTIFIED with name of dancer, name of dance school, category # and competitor #. Any other information, such as - on or off stage, props, etc. - should also be on tape front as well as on the case. All tapes and disks MUST be handed in with a case. ONLY ONE SONG ON EACH TAPE OR DISK . Marks will be deducted for any infractions.** PLEASE NOTE: CD-RW DISKS DO NOT PLAY ON SAGEBRUSH SOUND SYSTEMS. 9. NO picture taking (cameras or vidoes) will be allowed inside the Theatre or during performances. Please - NO CELLULAR PHONES on in the Theatre. 10. All dancers for a class must be BACKSTAGE OR IN WARM UP ROOM - 15 minutes prior to their class, and remain there until it is their turn to dance. Failure to comply with this time limit will result in dancer being disqualified and not allowed to perform in that class, 11. No dancers are to be in the Theatre auditorium IN COSTUME, visible to the adjudicator, prior to performance. 12. Sets and props are optional and are the sole responsibility of the performer. Quick set up is essential. Only Festival Volunteers may assist in the setting up or removal of these items and they must be light-weight and easily handled. 13. A NOVICE DANCER is one who had NO dance lessons in the competing category of dance (i.e. Jazz, Tap, Ballet) prior to SEPTEMBER immediately preceding the Festival. IN NOVICE GROUPS ALL MEMBERS MUST BE NOVICE DANCERS. 14. NO SOLO, in any class, should exceed 3 minutes (as per Provincial Rules); DUET OR TRIO ENTRIES in any class should not exceed 5 minutes. GROUPS are not to exceed 10 minutes. Although time limits have been set per dance category, it is not intended to imply that a dance must be that long. 15. Groups are not to be identified by DANCE STUDIO, but by SELECTION title to be performed. All Group entries MUST be entered with a Selection NAME on the entry form. 16. Material should be appropriately chosen and spliced, if necessary, for the dancers and ALL the audience. MATERIAL WHICH CONTAINS OBSCENE, VIOLENT, SUGGESTIVE OR SEXUALLY EXPLICIT LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION. 17. PLEASE NOTE: In Junior Section 12 YEARS AND UNDER for Provincials Only - only competitors 10, 11 & 12 years of age will be considered for Provincial Recommendation. A solo entry in the HIP-HOP or VARIETY-ENTERTAINMENT & Own Choreography categories are not accepted as a requirement for Provincial Recommendation.
ANY INFRACTION OF THE RULES WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION
SCHOLARSHIP:

3. Duets, Trios & Choreography do not qualify for Scholarship. A Solo entry in the HIP-HOP, VARIETY-ENTERTAINMENT or OWN CHOREOGRAPHY category is not accepted as a requirement for Provincial Recommendation.
Definitions of Dance Categories: * Definitions taken from the Oxford Dictionary of Dance & Encyclopedia Britannica, and most recent Provincial Rules and Regulations for the Dance Division (revised Summer 2000).
Ballet: Demi-Pointe - Classical, soft shoes, music with NO WORDS. No Lip synching allowed
Pointe - Classical, Pointe shoes, music with NO WORDS. No Lip synching allowed
Demi-Character - Ballet enchainments from the waist down and characterization from the waist up. Pointe or Demi-Pointe, music with NO WORDS. If hand props are used, they must be an essential part of the dance. No Lip synching allowed.
Character - must portray a specific character with the whole body. Ballet technique with stylized movement. Music with NO WORDS. No Lip synching allowed.
Interpretive - any technique may be used to portray an idea or mood. No Props. Music with NO WORDS. No Lip synching allowed. For Dance participants 11 yrs old & higher.
Lyrical Ballet - continual, gentle, flowing technical ballet movements. MUSIC MAY CONTAIN WORDS. No Lip Synching allowed. For Dance participants 11 yrs old & higher.
National or Character National - (Not including folk Dancing or Highland Dancing). Dancer is required to select one country only and portray, by costume and dance, the traditional dance style of that country. Music with NO WORDS. No lip synching allowed.
Classical Music (for classical Ballet) - music from the second half of the 18th Century to the end of the 19th Century, including the Western historical period of Hayden, Mozart and Beethoven
Contemporary Music (for classical Ballet) - music from the beginning of the 20th Century to the present, including such composers as Debussy, Gershwin and Joplin
Ethnic/Folk* - dances from different peoples based on customs, languages and cultures of that specific group of people’s ancestry. Different from National Dance in that “National” refers to citizenship of a specific state, not necessarily the customs of one ethnic group in a Nation. Music may contain words. No Lip Synching allowed.
Modern:
Modern Dance - Theatrical dance which is not strictly tied to the academic school of classical ballet. represented by a freer movement, collision of opposites (i.e. contraction and release, fall and recovery) formulated from natural rhythms. Does not focus on "tricks", utilizes floor work. Containing elements of Isadora Duncan, Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham,etc. No lip synching allowed. For Dance participants 13 yrs old & higher. Music may contain words Contemporary Dance - A constantly evolving style of movement using modern dance technique to explore and give physicality to human ideologies, behaviours and emotions. Emphasizes whole body approach including flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness to allow freedom of expression. No lip-synching allowed. For Dance participants 13 yrs old & higher. Music may contain words.

Stage Dance:
Hip-Hop* - A constantly evolving form of dance that emphasizes the expressive power of movement and relies on individualism and person style rather than a traditional vocabulary. Hip-Hop is always changing but essentially embraces styles of Break Dancing as well as Body Popping. No lip synching allowed. Please note: A solo entry in the HIP-HOP category is not accepted as a requirement for Provincial recommendation . For Dance participants 10 yrs old & under and higher. Music may contains words - discretion is required for suitability and to prevent being disqualified (see Dance Rule #16) Jazz - dance technique based on isolation and contraction/release. Upbeat tempo. No lip synching allowed. Music may contain words - discretion is advised (See dance rule #16) Jazz, Lyrical - technical movements blending and linking to slower paced music and tempo. No lip synching allowed. For Dance participants 11 yrs old & higher. Music may contains words - discretion is required for suitability and to prevent being disqualified (see Dance Rule #16) Tap - adjudicated on footwork, rhythm and presentation. NO tap sounds on the music. No lip synching allowed. Music may contain words Stage Dance - adapted from film or musical Theatre productions. Using any dance medium, no live voices, no lip-synching. Tap - adjudicated on footwork, rhythm and presentation. NO tap sounds on the music. No lip synching allowed. Music may contain words
Stage Dance - adapted from film or musical Theatre productions. Using any dance medium, no live voices, no lip-synching. Music may contain words
Song & Dance (with own voice) - no voice on tape, must be 50% dance (using any dance medium) and 50% voice. No microphones allowed. No lip synching allowed. Modern Stage Production - a combination of all ages and dance techniques. Vocals, lip synching and words on tape allowed. An entry in this category is not accepted as a provincial entry.
Variety/Entertainment - A combination of any and all dance techniques, Live voices, words, sound effects allowed on stage. Lip-synching allowed. Please note: A solo entry in the Variety-Entertainment category is not accepted as a requirement for Provincial recommendation.
Own Choreography:
1. Participant does own choreography of dance, choosing own music and theme. 2. Participant MUST SUBMIT Choreography Notes and Theme on or before February 13th, to Kamloops Festival of the Performing Arts, Box 162, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 5K6 Attention: Dance Representative 3. Notes detailing steps, counts and directions of travel on floor plan MUST BE SUBMITTED on or before February 13th. NOTES WILL ACCOUNT FOR 25% OF TOTAL MARK.
Notes should contain the following: Use of correct Dance Terminology Musical count with corresponding step count stage directions for step counts head and hand movements with step counts stick drawings showing steps with start, directional arrows and finish spot and pose a preamble that includes: - thoughts regarding choice of music - what the music brought out in the choreographer - possible costume ideas to add to the music (use drawings or fabric scraps for this if desired) - theme of dance/music be sure to have choreographer's name, date and name of dance on the first page (remember to advise student that choreography notes are copywriteable) last but not least, KEEP A PHOTOCOPY OF ALL THE NOTES and a duplicate receipt of mailing the envelope - in case there is a question or they get misplaced or lost in the mail. *Bring a copy to the festival when you perform. the notes may be faxed to the festival @ 250-374-3491
4. Participants in Choreography will NOT be allowed to wear costumes. Practice clothes ARE REQUIRED. as follows: TAP AND JAZZ - Dance pants and/or leotard in solid, dark colour and tights. BALLET and MODERN- Solid, dark colour leotard and pink tights, R.A.D. exam skirt optional (for ballet) 5. PROPS will be allowed if they are USED during the dance. 6. NO SPECIAL STAGE MAKEUP, ADORNMENTS OR EXTRAS ARE ALLOWED.
TECHNIQUE CLASS: A 20 minute adjudicated session under the direction of the adjudicator or her designate. Ballet Technique Class - Girls: PINK TIGHTS, SOLID COLOUR LEOTARD,HAIR IN BUN, BALLET SLIPPERS Boys: LIGHT COLOURED SHIRT, DARK TIGHTS, BALLET SLIPPERS For dance participants 10 yrs & higher. Jazz Technique Class - All: LEOTARD OR TIGHT FITTING TOP, JAZZ PANTS OR UNITARD IN DARK, SOLID COLOUR, HAIR TIED BACK, JAZZ FOOTWEAR. For dance participants 10 yrs & higher. Tap Technique Class - All: LEOTARD OR TIGHT FITTING TOP, JAZZ PANTS,JAZZ CAPRIS OR UNITARD IN DARK, SOLID COLOUR, HAIR TIED BACK, TAP SHOES. For dance participants 10 yrs & higher. Modern Technique Class- All: LEOTARD OR TIGHT FITTING TOP, JAZZ PANTS OR UNITARD IN DARK, SOLID COLOUR, HAIR TIED BACK, NO FOOT WEAR OR JAZZ THONGS ONLY. For dance participants 14 years & higher.
1. It is recommended that the participant interested in Provincial Recommendation should enter BOTH Tap and Jazz Technique Class. 2. At Provincial Level a Modern section exists. To qualify for this category, the participant again needs a Minimum of 2 solos: one from Modern and one from either Contemporary, Lyrical ballet or jazz or Interpretive ballet or jazz as well as the Modern Technique Class. A solo entry in the HIP-HOP &/or VARIETY-ENTERTAINMENT category is not accepted as a requirement for Provincial recommendation.
To prepare for Provincial Representation, the Technique Classes are required.
