DEFINITION OF CLASSES:

NOTE: ‘YEARS OF INSTRUCTION’ is an approximate guideline only; participants should enter classes at their current level.

‘GRADE’ refers to past or current syllabus of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto or of Conservatory Canada

‘BAND LEVEL’ refers to classifications endorsed by the Pacific Coast Music Festival Association.

PRELIMINARY: Band Level 100; up to two years of instruction. NON-COMPETITIVE

NOVICE: Grades 1 & 2; Band Level 200; one or two years of instruction

JUNIOR: Grades 3 & 4; Band Level 200-300; three or fours years of instruction

INTERMEDIATE: Grades 5 & 6; Band Level 300-400; four to six years of instruction

SENIOR: Grades 7 & 8; Band Level 400-500; five to seven years of instruction

ADVANCED: Grades 9 or higher; Band Level 500 or higher; over six years of instruction

INSTRUMENTAL RULES: - Note: See also General Rules at front of Syllabus

1. The name of instrument and the number of years of study MUST be shown on all entries.

2. Music stands will be provided for solos, duets, trios, quartets and quintets only.

3. Participants may enter Open Classes as well as graded classes but must perform at the SAME LEVEL IN ALL. See Rules #2, #3 and #6 in General Rules.

4. The Board TRUSTS THE INTEGRITY OF THE PERFORMERS to enter at their CURRENT grade level.

5. Where applicable, time limits will be strictly observed. Participants must move to stage, set up, warm up, perform and leave within the time limit.

6. For Ensemble classes, see Entry Form Rules #6 and #10, Rule #10 will also apply to Quartets and Quintets.

7. Pre-recorded accompaniments WILL NOT be permitted.

8. A participant may only perform ONCE in a particular class.

9. Bar numbers MUST be marked in Adjudicator’s music. If not, adjudication only.

10. If music is used, two originals MUST be in hall. One for the performer, the other for the Adjudicator. See General Rule #13 and #14

11. Participants must tune own instruments by INTERMEDIATE level or above. No assistance will be allowed. Result – disqualification.

12. A change of selection cannot be made or announced as a change on the stage at performance time. A performer doing so will be disqualified.

SCHOLARSHIP:

2. To be considered for scholarship, STUDENTS MUST ENTER:

Novice, Junior, Intermediate - TWO SOLO classes, one of which MUST be memorized
Senior and Advanced - THREE SOLO classes, one of which MUST be memorized

3. OPEN & GROUP CLASSES - DO NOT QUALIFY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

4. Drum Set Solo classes do not count for Scholarship

KAMLOOPS SYMPHONY AWARD - ADVANCES STUDENTS ONLY

1. See General Rule #37.

2. To be considered for this award, STUDENTS MUST ENTER:

            i) One or more movements of a concerto plus TWO SOLO classes
                                                OR
                ii) one or more movements of a concerto plus a concert program.
