PIANO RULES - Note: See also General Rules at front of Syllabus
1. Grade level refers to past or current syllabus of Royal Conservatory of Toronto, or of Conservatory Canada.
2. In reference to Baroque, the composition must be by a Baroque composer, or by a composer of another period, but written in the Baroque style.
3. In reference to 20th /21st Century classes, in Grade 9, 10 & Diploma - it does NOT include French Impressionist Composers (such as Debussy, Ravel and Ibert) or Canadian composers.
4. Entries in the Preliminary classes must NOT play pieces from any graded level. These classes are to accommodate competitors who have not yet reached Grade 1 level.
5. Classes with more than twenty entries may be divided into separate classes, according to age, if at all possible.
6. Participants must perform at the same level in all classes. See General Rules 2, 3 & 6.
7. Own choice selections MUST comply with the period named in the Syllabus, for the class entered. The Festival Committee cannot be responsible for detecting error. See General Rules # 13 in case of protest.
8. A change of selection cannot be made or announced as a change on the stage at performance time. A performer doing so will be disqualified.
9. The Board TRUSTS THE INTEGRITY OF THE PERFORMERS to enter at the grade level at which they are CURRENTLY working.
10. For those students studying at the same Grade level for two consecutive festivals (between Grade 1 through grade 7), they may not play in the same solo class if they placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the first year. For students studying Grade 8 through Diploma level, they may not enter a second year in a class if they placed 1st in that class in the first year.
11. Bar numbers are to be marked in Adjudicator's copy of music.
12. If music is used, two originals MUST be in hall, one for performer and they other for the Adjudicator. See General Rule #8. Internet downloaded pieces must state "Public Domain" on each sheet or have a receipt of purchase attached to each piece downloaded.
13. 20th /21st Century & Canadian Classes: only works found in RCM & Conservatory Canada syllabus lists may be performed in these classes.
14. Jazz/Pop Classes: RCM has a graded list of works in this category, which may be used. Other works may be performed as well. KFPA trusts the integrity of the teacher in ensuring that music performed in theses classes is at the appropriate level of difficulty for the grade entered.
