SPEECH RULES:
1. Copies no longer need to be submitted prior to the Festival. Originals must be presented to the adjudicator at time of performance. When a selection is edited, a clean, typed copy of the edited version must be presented to the adjudicator at time of performance, with the original 1a. Whenever possible, please indicte title and author of selection/piece on the entry form
2. Own choice selections must have appropriate/acceptable language and content that is suitable for ALL AGE LEVELS OF PARTICIPANTS AND AUDIENCE. Editing for length and/or content is encouraged.
3. No props or costumes are to be used except where specified.

5. Participants in Creative Story Telling and Public Speaking (Extemporaneous) must not receive assistance at the time of performance.
6. Performance time MUST be marked on the entry form for all “Own Choice” selections. All time limits must be strictly observed (please time selections carefully to avoid penalty).
7. All Solo entries must be memorized unless otherwise stated.
8. Solo entries in age groups 6 years and under, 8 years and under and 10 years and under are for ADJUDICATION ONLY. (These participants are still eligible for adjudicator-recommended scholarships)
9.Solo entries in age groups 13 years and under, 16 years and under, 19 years and under and 19-28 are Competitive. Any solo entry can elect to be non-competitive.
10. The following definitions have been established as guidelines for participants:
LYRIC POETRY: Lyric generally describes a short poem neither narrative nor dramatic, having, as it's subject, the poet's personal feelings - real or assumed. It could be in the form of a song, an ode or a sonnet, dealing with a single situation or idea. NO MOVEMENT OR GESTURES. Senior students are encouraged to observe the conventions associated with the lyric style.
NARRATIVE DRAMATIC POETRY: A poem that tells a story with dialogue. Limited movement and gestures. Simple costumes and props may be used
DRAMATIC PROSE: (Story Telling) Literacy expression that is NOT POETRY. Suitable selections will come from novels and short stories and will contain narration, description and dialogue. NOT TO BE ACTED OUT. Presentation may make use of an “off stage focus”
DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE: A dramatic portrayal of a single character played by the competitor. Movement is encouraged and a minimum of props and costuming permitted. May be PROSE or POETRY, NOT a scene from a published play. (See Solo Scene)
SOLO SCENE: A dramatic sketch, taken from a published play (excluding Shakespeare). The competitor plays the character. Movement is encouraged and a minimum of props and costuming permitted.
POETRY DUO: A poem recited by 2 students. Poems that have conversations, dialogues or have two distinct moods work well.
SONNET: A lyric poem of 14 lines with a specific rhythm scheme or structure.
**CONTEMPORARY DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE: as Dramatic Monologue above but may contain words/themes some audience members may find offensive and may not be suitable for all audience ages. STORY READING - One selection, Own choice
Story reading is reading a story. The BOOK MUST BE USED. May not be acted out. Vocal characterization is encouraged. Although eye contact with the audience is important, the selection is NOT to be memorized. Encouraged to select material at own grade level or above. Competitor may stand or be seated.

SONNET - One selection, Own choice A poem having 14 lines, usually in Iambic Pentameter and a certain arrangement of rhymes
SHAKESPEARE - One selection, own choice This is an excerpt from a play, by William Shakespeare, in which the performer portrays ONE character whose speech is being spoken. It is recommended participants select a character appropriate to own age and gender. It is staged as if the scene were taken from the complete performance. A minimum of props and costuming is permitted. Time limit 5 minutes
PUBLIC SPEAKING - One Selection, Own choice of subject Oratory - MUST be participant's original selection. In public speaking, proper use of notes is mandatory. Evidence of memorization could disqualify a speaker. Time limit 5 minutes.
PUBLIC SPEAKING (EXTEMPORANEOUS) A topic chosen by the adjudicator will be made available to each participant approximately 5 minutes prior to the class. Each participant will then be required to speak on his/her topic. 12 years & under, 14 years & under and 17 years & under - Time limit 2 minutes 19 years & under - Time limit 3 minutes Open - Time limit 5 minutes
CREATIVE STORY TELLING The adjudicator presents a picture to the participant whom then creates a story pertaining to same. They will be given a quiet area for unassisted study. . Participants may stand or be seated. Preparation time - 5 minutes Presentation time limit - 3 minutes Students are encouraged to choose appropriate themes and subject matter.

Actors read from a prepared script. Two or more voices. Suggestion of costume or props. Readers sit or stand to speak. Characters and plot conveyed through voice, facial expressions and a minimum of movement/gestures.
