2. A recorded accompaniment is NOT acceptable.
3. For some Folk Songs, printed music may not be available; in such cases, a copy of the words MUST be presented to the Adjudicator.
4. Bar numbers are to be marked at the beginning of each line in the Adjudicator’s copy of music. SEE GENERAL RULE #13
5. Two original copies of the music MUST be in hall; one for the accompanist, the other for the Adjudicator. See General Rule #13

DEFINITION OF PERIOD/STYLE
ART SONG - one selection by any recognized composer. An Art Song is a musical setting of a poem, suitable for recital, usually for solo voice with piano accompaniment. Art Songs should be sung in the original language where possible, but English translations are acceptable at Level 1.
ART SONG - ENGLISH - one selection by any recognized composer of English language Art Song ( e.g. British, Canadian, American). The song must have been set in English by the composer.
ART SONG - FRENCH - one selection by any recognized composer of French Art Song; to be sung in French.
ART SONG - GERMAN - one selection by any recognized composer of German Lieder; to be sung in German.
ART SONG - ITALIAN - one selection, by any recognized composer of Italian Art Song; to be sung in Italian.
ART SONG - OTHER LANGUAGE - one selection, to be sung in the original language. “Other Language” refers to any language not listed in the student’s age/level category. ( e.g. in Elementary Level 2 it refers to other than English, whereas in Senior Level 3 it refers to other than English, Italian, French or German).
FOLK SONG - one selection from traditional, i.e. ethnic, music; may be sung in original language or English translation. Folk songs are those that have no identifiable composer.
MUSICAL THEATRE - BALLAD - one selection from a stage musical or motion-picture musical. A ballad is a solo song, roughly equivalent to a soliloquy in a play, usually somewhat slow and introspective. Costumes, props and movement are permitted, but are often downplayed in the ballad genre. No marks are awarded for costumes and props.
MUSICAL THEATRE - COMEDY OR SCENE - one selection from a stage or motion picture musical. A Comedy usually includes some dialogue and/or movement to effectively place the song in its context in the musical. Where appropriate, costumes, props and movement are desirable in this class and should be encouraged. No marks are awarded for costumes or props.
OPERA - an aria, with recitative if applicable, from any recognized opera; to be sung in original language.
OPERETTA - one selection from any recognized operetta or light opera, e.g. Gilbert & Sullivan, Victor Herbert; may be sung in original language or English translation.
SACRED ARIA - an aria, preferably with recitative if applicable, from any recognized major sacred work, such as Oratorio, Cantata, Requiem, Mass, Motet or Passion; may be sung in original language or English translation.
SACRED SONG - one selection, which may be graded material or other music used in worship; may be sung in original language or English translation. Arias from major works such as oratorios are excluded unless specified.
